Make it Art.

In my first semester of graduate school at the University of Miami, while working on my very first video project, I got the piece of advice that’s stuck with me the most through the years: Make it art.

I know it sounds really obvious. It SEEMS really obvious to me when I’m sitting here writing about it. But at the time and on many shoots since then, I’ve gotten so caught up in getting the shot and making sure all the technical aspects are right and getting all of the pieces I need to tell the story that it’s easy for forget that one simple rule. Everything you shoot should be beautiful and everything should be art. Make it art. Maybe those words aren’t as profound for everyone else as they were/are for me but when my professor told me that, it was like a lightbulb switched on. DUH. Make it ART. I can still hear Rich saying those words in my head and I almost always remember that moment when I’m out shooting.

There are lots of things that I like and some things I don’t like as much about this video from Bombay Flying Club. I’ve watched it several times for many different reasons but I do think they made it art. There are so many beautiful scenes in this video and I love the subtle movement and muted colors. Definitely art.
